The art of AC/DC Lane in Melbourne
On a recent trip to Melbourne, Australia, Roppongi Rocks boss Stefan Nilsson revisited AC/DC Lane to document some of the lane’s fascinating street art.
AC/DC Lanre is a tiny lane shooting off from Flinders Lane in Melbourne’s business district. The lane, formerly Corporation Lane (boring!), was renamed by the City of Melbourne in 2004 as a tribute to AC/DC’s contribution to Melbourne. While the band was formed in Sydney in 1973, they soon relocated to Melbourne.
According to reports from the time, in his speech at the renaming ceremony, Melbourne’s Lord Mayor John So said: “As the song says, there is a highway to hell, but this is a laneway to heaven. Let us rock.” Bagpipers (a tip of the hat to the fact that the key band members were Scottish immigrants) then performed “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock’n’Roll)”.
Over the years, AC/DC Lane has become a place with fantastic street art, including works celebrating AC/DC.
