Mikkey Dee celebrated Motörhead at Skogsröjet

Mikkey Dee had fun revisiting his Motörhead past at Skogsröjet.

Swedish drummer Mikkey Dee has (so far) been part of three legendary bands – King Diamond, Motörhead and, currently, Scorpions. But when he came to Rejmyre in the Swedish sticks, Mikkey was fully focused on having fun paying tribute to his old band Motörhead. He was the band’s long-serving drummer between 1992 and 2015.

As we all know, it is not possible to replace the late Lemmy. Thus, Mikkey did not attempt to do that, but rather just had fun playing Motörhead songs with a couple of friends, William Dickborn and Viktor Skatt. It was nothing more than that and that is why it worked. The beer-fuelled festival crowd loved it. “Iron Fist” kicked off a great set consisting of old favourites like “Killed by Death”, “Love Me Like a Reptile”, “Born to Raise Hell” and “Ace of Spades”. The show finished in style with “Overkill”. The performance suffered a bit with a few technical issues, but the trio got it all back on track and gave the audience what they wanted – a great time celebrating Motörhead’s legacy. Mikkey is still drumming like it’s nobody’s business. In Scorpions, he has to take it easy on many of the songs. Here, revisiting the raw power and attitude of the Motörhead songs, there was no holding back!

Lemmy passed away a decade ago, but Motörhead’s legend lives on. I saw Motörhead live a few times, both in Europe and Japan. Mikkey Dee with Friends can’t compete with that. But as they were not trying to do that, it turned into a fun evening with friends on and off stage. Long live Motörhead!
