RIP, At the Gates’ Tompa Lindberg
Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg, lead vocalist for Swedish melodic death metal band At the Gates and a pioneer of the Gothenburg Sound, has passed away.
Tompa Lindberg began his career as the frontman of the extreme metal band Grotesque in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1988. Subsequently, he co-founded melodic death metal band At the Gates in 1990. The band, pioneers of the Gothenburg Sound, led the melodic death metal wave from the front. They released seven studio albums between 1992 and 2021. Especially “Slaughter of the Soul”, the band’s fourth album from 1995, became one of the genre’s classic albums. Before his death, Tompa had recorded vocals for a new album with the band.
While most famous for fronting At the Gates, during his career, he was also a member of The Crown, Skitsystem, Lock Up, Disfear, Nightrage, The Lurking Fear and The Great Deceiver.
He was diagnosed with cancer at the end of 2023. He fought a brave battle, but on 16th September 2025, Tompa passed away at the age of 52.
