The Gonzoes “Charger”

Gritty, beer-fuelled and gloriously unpolished garage rock from Stockholm.

The Gonzoes is a new band with an old sound. Formed in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2023, the band’s first release was a six-track EP called “What is this shit!” in 2024. “Charger” is the band’s full-length debut album. And what a smoker it is! The music smells like gasoline and beer.

This garage rock comes with a punky attitude. There are echoes and hints here of The Nomads. To me, The Gonzoes sounds like The Hellacopters want to sound (the ‘Copters have sadly become too polished without Dregen). It’s like The Hives minus the stage clothes and the egos. The Gonzoes’ music is gloriously unpolished. At times, the music feels like a sonic kick in the scrotum.

The splendid “Unholy Drive” is the undisputed highlight of the album. It’s a cracker of a song that undoubtedly will become a live favourite. “Challenger” and “Bitch Flipper” are other immediate favourite tracks on this kick-ass album. This music is perfect for a road trip with the windows rolled down and the volume turned to eleven.

The Gonzoes’ full-length debut album “Charger” is out now.
