Deadtide in Tokyo
Deadtide came out of the rabbit hole to perform its modern metal for the band’s Japanese fans.
Deadtide at Space Odd in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan on 14th May 2025
My mate Todd Willits sent me a message some months back informing me that American modern melodic death metal band Deadtide had decided to perform their first-ever concerts outside the US in Japan.
As the band has not done many live performances in recent years, I wanted to see this. I was curious to hear how Deadtide would deliver its modern take on metal live. Deadtide is a band from the New York City/New Jersey area. Formed in 2006, the band released its first EP, “Ephemeral”, in 2013. Another EP, “The Great Unknown”, followed in 2017. In 2021, the band finally released its first full-length studio album, “The Rabbit Hole”.
Once the two Tokyo gigs, as opening act for Finnish band Insomnium, were announced, I also realised that Todd would be filling in on bass as a live member of the band, which is led from the front by vocalist Mike Metal and guitarist Phil Arnone. Even better!
Deadtide’s music is modern melodic death metal. At times, it is in metalcore territory. The half-hour set consisted of six tracks from the band’s 2021 album “The Rabbit Hole” – “Relentless”, “Finish the Nightmare”, “Alteration”, “The Rabbit Hole”, “Begin the Dream” and “Osmosis” – plus an excellent brand-new song called “The Battle for New Earth”. The set was short, intense and very good. Hopefully, they will be back in Japan soon to perform a longer set. They certainly won some new fans with these first Japan gigs.
