Fury “Interceptor”
Fury is a fab British hard rock band that is so much more than just Becky Baldwin’s “other band”.
British hard rockers Fury have got a fair bit of attention in recent years. When the band’s bassist Becky Baldwin joined the mighty Merciful Fate a few years ago, many Merciful Fate and King Diamond fans subsequently checked out Fury. That is good because the band gets noticed. But Fury is musically rather different from Merciful Fate. Fury is, for the most part, high-energy melodic hard rock, often catchy as fuck. The music feels modern, but it is built on a solid foundation of old-school rock’n’roll.
“Don’t Lie to Me” sounds like Fury’s answer to Amaranthe’s “That Song”. Poppy, big chorus, hand claps… A musical equivalent to a glorious East London kebab with extra everything (yeah, I know the band is from the West Midlands and unlikely East London kebab aficionados, but you get my drift). It is a smashingly terrific song!
“In Pursuit of Destiny”, “Can’t Resist (Gimme What I Need)”, “Look at Us Now”, “DTR”… the great songs on this album just keep coming. The band is not afraid of pushing the boundaries. They go where the music takes them. In “Walk Away”, we get Americana-style acoustic guitars. The song turns into Fury’s answer to Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive”. In “Undistilled”, we get a power ballad (but not one of those shitty ones, no, this is a proper one with great vocals and a tasty guitar solo).
This band is terrific. They are so much more than just Becky’s “other band”. I love their combination of two distinctly different lead vocalists, the contrasts between catchy pop hooks, heavy metal guitars and thunderous drums. And Becky Baldwin’s Lemmy-style bass playing, of course.
Fury is Julian Jenkins (guitar, vocals), Nyah Ifill (vocals), Becky Baldwin (bass), Tom Fenn (drums) and Tom Atkinson (guitar). They have come far since they released “The Lightning Dream”, their debut full-length studio album, in 2014. The new album has been produced superbly by Todd Campbell, guitarist for Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons and son of Motörhead legend Phil Campbell.
Fury’s “Interceptor” album will be out on 5th September via Mighty Music.
