Frozen Crown in Tokyo

Italian heavy metal band Frozen Crown brought the heat to Tokyo. The show was hot, hot, hot.

A Frozen Crown show has everything I want from a metal show: great tunes combining fierce heavy metal with catchy melodies, a three-guitar attack, a loyal following of fans and a high-energy performance. This evening in Tokyo was no different. It was built on the success of the band’s earlier Japan tours.

Frozen Crown may be an Italian band, but it was born in Japan in 2018 when Japanese record label Marquee Avalon decided to back Federico Mondelli’s solo project, which was named Frozen Crown. Over the years, Frozen Crown has evolved into a proper band. Only vocalist Giada “Jade” Etro has been there next to Federico since the start. But the current band line-up has heaps of chemistry. Its members seem to be having fun together. Backstage after the second Tokyo gig of the tour, it was all smiles as the band celebrated another Japanese win.

Since they last toured Japan in 2023, Frozen Crown has welcomed two new guitarists into the band. Founding guitarist and vocalist Federico Mondelli is now flanked by Alessia Lanzone and Alexandra Lioness. The three-guitar attack is a great asset, both musically and visually. As expected, this night in Tokyo, bassist Francesco Zof and drummer Niso Tomasini kept a steady ship. Lead vocalist Giada “Jade” Etro not only has the pipes to deliver. She also has a stage presence. She had the Tokyo audience with her throughout the evening. The newest addition to the band, Serbian guitarist Alexandra Lioness, was a joy to see. She seemed so happy to be in the band and add her flair to an already great band.

Federico was his usual self – combining killer musicianship with brutal vocals and a sweaty mad-man performance. The man can’t stand still on stage for more than five seconds! Fan interaction is a big part of the Frozen Crown story. There is no band without the support of its fans. Thus, give the fans what they want or even more than that. In the middle of the Tokyo show, to the delight of the fans, Federico took his guitar and went into the audience and continued to perform the rest of the song from there before he returned to the stage.

The show kicked off with “Arctic Gales” and “Neverending” and just kept going until a terrific evening ended with “Queen of Blades” and “I Am the Tyrant”. The band was on fire throughout the set, which included many favourite songs such as “Steel and Gold”, “Winterfall”, “Night of the Wolf”, “I Am the Wind”, “Netherstorm”, “Blood on the Snow” and “Call of the Wild”.
