Danko Jones “Leo Rising”

With Danko Jones as your soundtrack, every day does indeed feel like a Saturday night.

I love everything about Danko Jones.

Danko Jones is more than a person. It is an explosive Canadian rock trio that always delivers, both live on stage and in the studio. Fronted by the seemingly unstoppable Danko Jones on vocals and guitars, the band also houses the immense talents of bassist John Calabrese and drummer Rich Knox. It is a power trio that has built its musical backbone on sweat, snapped guitar strings, broken drumsticks, road dust and relentlessness.

This trio plays rock’n’roll with a punky attitude. The tunes are bloody catchy and the delivery is spot on. Seeing them live a few months ago at a secret gig in Stockholm (when they in addition to the old favourites performed three new songs – “Everyday Is Saturday Night”, “I Love It Louder”, “What You Need”), I knew that the new album would be better than a dodgy kebab at 3:00 am in the wrong part of town.

Canada has plenty of natural resources, but few rival the critical and strategic importance of Danko Jones. This Toronto trio is the best thing to come out of Canada since Quebec gave the world poutine (a revolutionary Canadian dish consisting of French fries, cheese curds and gravy) in the 1950s. A bunch of these new songs – not least “Diamond in the Rough” (the studio version features a guest appearance by Marty Friedman) and “What You Need” – will become anthems at Danko’s live shows. These are tunes to shout along to. This is music that grabs you by the balls and wakes you up.

With Danko Jones as your soundtrack, every day does indeed feel like a Saturday night. “Leo Rising” is the trio’s 12th studio album. It feels like they are just getting started.

Danko Jones’ new album “Leo Rising” will be released on 21st November via Perception.
