Shibuya royally rocked by Gueen

A fun evening celebrating Queen’s music with Japanese tribute act Gueen.

Gueen at Duo Music Exchange, Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan on 6th February 2024

We got an evening of paying respect to Her Majesty as Freddie Hatae and his Gueen band put on a fun Queen tribute show in Tokyo. Gueen, Japan’s number one Queen tribute band, has been entertaining fans for the past 34 years. They are a fun act to watch and musically they do a terrific job of recreating the past magic of Queen.

Over the years, Gueen has put on many different Queen shows focused on specific albums, shows or eras of the band’s history. This evening in Shibuya, Gueen put on a mix of the best of Queen. Gueen’s frontman Freddie Hatae went all the way with never-ending costume changes (including fake chest hair) and all the right stage moves. It is obvious that this band is not just great entertainment, the band members have made a lot of effort to create something that closely resembles the original music.

This was an evening focused on Queen hits. We got treated to a show packed with favourites such as “Now I’m Here”, “You’re My Best Friend”, “You Take My Breath Away”, “Bicycle Race”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Radio Ga Ga”, “Mustapha”, “Tie Your Mother Down”, “We Will Rock You”, “We Are the Champions” and many more. The evening’s highlight for me was a fantastic rendition of “Flash”, Queen’s theme song from the “Flash Gordon” movie. And I must award extra points to Gueen for having a Morgan Fisher in their tribute act. A nice touch.

Tribute acts come and go. The fact that Gueen has been around for 34 years is evident in the loyal audience they have, many with t-shirts, towels and other Gueen merch. Yes, that is Gueen merch rather than Queen merch. A tribute act that can sell its own merchandise is doing something right.
